The Influence of Acidity on Polymerization of Aniline: Interpretation of Large Number of Spectra Using Factor Analysis

Abstract. The progress of the oxidative polymerization of aniline with ammonium peroxydisulfate in aqueous medium has been monitored in situ by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The growth of polyaniline film at the crystal surface as well as changes proceeding in the surrounding aqueous phase is reflected in the spectra. It has been shown that in aqueous solution of sulfuric acid, granular polyaniline was produced, in solutions of acetic acid or without any acid, polyaniline nanotubes were obtained. The evolution of structures arising during the process of aniline oxidation is affected especially by the protonation of an intermediate pernigraniline form. We present an example of application of factor analysis for analyzing the course of polymerizations of aniline in aqueous solution without any acid. Several different processes were distinguished in the course of aniline polymerization by this method.
